Special Seminars for High School Students 2017
On October 7, 2017, a special seminar was conducted for high school students in Aomori Prefecture.
The seminar was held in Hirosaki University 50th Anniversary Auditorium under the cooperation of Aomori High School Educational Study Group, Science Association and the Japan Chemical Society, with the support of Aomori Prefectural Board of Education.
The invited speakers were Professor Masahiro Murakami from Kyoto University and Professor Daisuke Uemura from Kanagawa University. Professor Murakami spoke about the award structure of the Nobel Prize and Nobel Prizes in organic chemistry. During the lecture, Professor Murakami conducted a demonstration using a die and a practical experiment that involved smelling limonene to help people understand what an enantiomer is, and the students appeared very interested. Professor Uemura then spoke about molecular imaging and important marine-derived natural products in the field of drug development. The talk ranged from their discovery to front-line applications.
In the afternoon session, the students were divided into four groups and moved to laboratories of the education department or the science and engineering department. They conducted an experiment to experience Suzuki-Miyaura Coupling reaction. When the test tube was illuminated with black light, the sample emitted light and also changed its color. The students seemed to enjoy observing these phenomena.
