Special Seminars for High School Students

On October 8, 2016, a special seminar was held for high school students in Oita prefecture.

The seminar was held at HorutoHall OITA in cooperation with Oita Super Science (OSS) Consortium, with the support of Oita Prefectural Board of Education and Oita Prefectural High School Science Teachers Research Association.
We invited four lecturers, including Professosr Kohei Tamao, who is the former president of the Chemical Society of Japan (CSJ), a scientific advisor to RIKEN, and the Research Director of the Toyota Physical and Chemical Research Institute. First, Professor Masayuki Inoue gave a lecture on the basics of organic chemistry, which was very helpful, and then Professor Shigehiro Yamaguchi lectured on fluorescent molecules and also talked about cooperation with different fields of research. After the lunch break, high school students presented their research findings. Every research theme presented had achieved good results at the Japan Students Science Awards, and the students’ presentations on many highly advanced topics impressed the lecturers as well as university professors belong to IOCF. The session was followed by a lecture by Professor Motomu Kanai on the influence of medicine development on society, and design of his new medicines. Finally, Professor Kohei Tamao talked about chemistry topics that are familiar with participants by using the periodic table. The high school students seemed to have enjoyed the messages from the professors and increased their motivation to learn organic chemistry.
